As promised, my rant about Remembrance Day. It's not really a rant. More of a mini-diatribe. In the States they have Veteran's Day. At this point I should really just accept that it's the thought that counts, and move on. But I won't. For some reason it really bothers me that they would honour just the veterans. This is not to say that they shouldn't be honoured, because they should. They've suffered and survived, and are here now, and we honour them. But what about all the others? All those people who didn't make it back? Those people who were never found, who never had proper burials, who remain nameless, and unknown, except to their families, thirty feet deep in the mud somewhere in France? They are not veterans, and it upsets me to think that they aren't being honoured on a day like yesterday.

In a society where everyone thinks it's worth it to take a minute in September to remember all the senseless killing, I think it's fucking offensive to the families and memories of those that died in the Wars to not extend at least the same courtesy to people who went willingly, knowingly, to their deaths, because they felt it would put forward their cause and that they could protect the rest of us mere civilians from forces greater than any of us individually.

Anyone talking to me about what happened in New York probably thinks I'm a heartless bitch. And I kind of am. It sucks that all those people died; there aren't words enough to express how much pain is encapsulated in that day. Just as there aren't enough words to describe the loss and waste of all those people, innocent or otherwise who die in every other bloody conflict on this planet. It just happens that my perspective on the whole thing is a little less America-centric.
